CYANOKIT® 5G (hydroxocobalamin for injection), by Meridian Medical Technologies, is the only FDA-approved antidote for either suspected or known cyanide poisoning. It is designed specifically to be used on the scene or at the hospital for acute CN poisoning from any source. It is for intravenous use.
A diluent of 100ml of Sodium Chloride for injection is required, however, is not included. Lactated Ringers or D5W may also be used.
The cyanide in fire smoke can be deadly. Because cyanide prevents cells from using oxygen (O2), antidotal therapy may be a necessary addition to standard supportive therapy that includes supplemental O2.
